Clinics serving patients with type 2 diabetes may now deploy an automated text-messaging system to send friendly communications reminding patients to take their medications, choose healthy foods, and stay active.

A survey sent to more than 43,000 patients living in several states around the country finds that 96% of patients who use patient web portals prefer immediate online access to their clinical test results, notwithstanding the prospect of reviewing results before their physicians have a chance to review them. Led by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), the survey was reported March 20 in JAMA Network Open.

A prostate cancer polygenic risk score (PRS) has limited utility for enhancing prostate cancer screening, according to a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Travis Osterman, DO, MS, assistant professor of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI), Hematology and Oncology and director of Cancer Clinical Informatics at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), has been appointed to a new role as Associate Vice President for Research Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Osterman will report to Peter Embí, MD, MS, Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, and Neal Patel, MD, MPH, chief information officer for Health IT at VUMC.

Interest in ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot and text generation tool, is growing among physicians, with nearly 43 percent saying they would consider using it for medical research, according to a recent poll.

Established in 2016, REDCap Day (Research Electronic Data Capture) is an annual event featuring presentations and workshops for the Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College research community. For the third year in a row, REDCap Day was hosted virtually. There were three morning-long sessions, Feb. 1-3, drawing 415 attendees from a total of 158 departments representing Vanderbilt and Meharry. See the full agenda here.

As the newly named chief medical information officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dara Mize, MD, MS, assumes a critical role for the health system. She will serve on the HealthIT executive team as the primary liaison to clinical leadership across VUMC. Mize will lead the team of clinical directors who have extensive expertise in clinical informatics. These clinical directors work with HealthIT experts to analyze, develop and implement solutions that optimize the use of technology and its impact on caring for VUMC’s patients and families.
