S. Toufeeq Ahmed, PhD, MS

Dr. Toufeeq Ahmed is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Education Informatics at the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics and McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

He was formerly Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics at VUMC, where he also directed the Education Informatics program at the Health Informatics Technologies and Services division of VUMC. He led education informatics research, development, and operations. He provided informatics and technology leadership for the School of Medicine and is active with various leadership and education committees like Curriculum 2.0 Steering Committee, Student Learning Tech Committee (as a faculty mentor), personalized learning plan, and the Vanderbilt core clinical curriculum committee. He is also involved in national and international medical education technology and standards committees like MedBiquitous and AAMC MedAPS.

Dr. Ahmed is a computer scientist by training, with expertise in natural language processing, information retrieval, and adaptive user interfaces. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed publications. He was awarded Arizona State University’s Challenges Innovator Award 2010 for his PhD dissertation work. He had the privilege of giving an invited talk at TEDx Phoenix 2010. Previously, he has served as Chief Technology Officer of a NSF funded social recommendation startup (Theophilus Inc). From 2010 to 2012, he was a National Library of Medicine’s post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University.
